बर्बरीक
महाभारत के समय अत्यधिक बलशाली गदाधारी भीम के पुत्र घटोत्कच का विवाह नाग कन्या मौर्वी से हुआ था। घटोत्कच और मौर्वी की संतान बर्बरीक हुई। जो आगे चलकर श्याम के नाम से प्रसिद्ध हुए।
मौर्वी नंदन
मौर्वी (कामनकंता) की संतान होने के कारण बर्बरीक यानि श्याम बाबा को मौर्वी नंदन कहा जाता है। खाटू श्याम मेले के दौरान मौर्वी नंदन के जैकार खूब गूंजते है।
बाण धारी
बर्बरीक अपने दादा और पिता की तरह वीर यौद्धा थे। वीर बर्बरीक के पास तीन बाण ऐसे थे जिससे वे संपूर्ण ब्रह्माण्ड को जीत सकते थे। इस लिए श्याम बाबा को तीन बाणधारी कहा जाता है। उनके जैसा संपूर्ण लोक में को धनुर्धर न तो था और न ही आज तक हुआ है।
शीश के दानी
महाभारत युद्ध के दौरान जब बर्बरीक अपनी मां से आशिर्वाद लेने पहुंचे तब मां ने उनसे हारे पक्ष का साथ देने का वचन लिया। यानि जिसकी युद्ध में हार होगी, वे उसकी तरफ से लड़ेंगे। भगवान श्रीकृष्ण सर्वव्यापी थे। उन्होंने पता था कि हार कौरवों की होनी है, ऐसे में बर्बरीक उनकी तरफ से युद्ध लड़ेंगे तो स्थिति बदल सकती है। ऐसे में उन्होंने ब्राह्मण का वेश धारण किया और फिर शीश मांग लिया। बर्बरीक ने अपना शीश दान कर दिया। इस कारण श्याम बाबा को शीश का दानी कहा जाता है।
श्रीश्याम
श्री कृष्ण ने बर्बरीक को शीश दान मांगने की वजह भी बताई। उन्होंने कहा कि युद्ध आरम्भ होने से पूर्व युद्धभूमि पूजन के लिए तीनों लोकों में सर्वश्रेष्ठ क्षत्रिय के शीश की आहुति देनी होती है। इसलिए ऐसा करने के लिए वे विवश थे। बर्बरीक ने उनसे प्रार्थना की कि वे अन्त तक युद्ध देखने और अपना नाम उन्हें देने की प्रार्थना की। श्री कृष्ण ने उनकी यह प्रार्थना स्वीकार कर ली। श्री कृष्ण इस बलिदान से प्रसन्न होकर बर्बरीक को युद्ध में सर्वश्रेष्ठ वीर की उपाधि से अलंकृत किया। साथ ही अपना नाम श्याम भी उन्हें दिया।
कलियुग के अवतारी
भगवान श्रीकृष्ण ने उन्हें श्याम नाम देने के साथ ही यह भी वरदान दिया कि वे कलियुग में पूजे जाएंगे। इसलिए उन्हें कलियुग का अवतारी भी कहा जाता है। अभी कलियुग चल रहा है और ऐसे में श्याम बाबा भक्तों की आस्था के केंद्र है। हर साल लाखों की संख्या में भक्त बाबा के दरबार में आकर हाजिरी लगाते है।
लीले का अश्वार
श्याम बाबा को लीले का अश्वार कहा जाता है। दरअसल, वीर बर्बरीक के पास नीले रंग का घोड़ा था। नीले रंग को स्थानीय भाषा में लीला भी कहा जाता है। इस लिए उन्हें नीले के अश्वार या लीले के अश्वार कहा जाता है।
लखदातार
श्याम बाबा की महिमा निराली है। कहा जाता है कि जिस पर श्याम बाबा की कृपा होती है, वह हर तरह से संपन्न हो जाता है। इस मान्यता के चलते श्याम बाबा को लखदातार कहा जाता है। यहीं वजह है कि श्याम बाबा के भक्तों में जहां सामान्य व्यक्ति भी है धनवान बन जाता है। श्याम जी के मेले में पश्चिम बंगाल, आसाम, महाराष्ट्र, पंजाब, गुजरात आदि से बड़ी संख्या में भक्त आते है।
हारे का सहारा
जब सब जगह से निराश व्यक्ति श्याम बाबा की भक्ति में लीन हो जाता है तो उसके समस्त दुख और पाप समाप्त हो जाते है। इसलिए श्याम बाबा को हारे का सहारा कहा जाता है।
खाटू नरेश
श्याम बाबा खाटू के शासक है। इसलिए उन्हें खाटू नरेश कहते है।
मोरछड़ी धारक
श्याम बाबा को चूंकि भगवान श्रीकृष्ण का आशीर्वाद प्राप्त है। इसलिए श्रीकृष्ण की प्रिय वस्तु मोरपंखी, बांसुरी भी उनको प्रिय है। मोरछड़ी रखने के कारण उन्हें मोरछड़ी धारक कहा जाता है।

Barbareek
At the time of Mahabharata, Ghatotkacha, the son of a very powerful mace-wielding Bhima, was married to a serpent girl, Maurvi. The son of Ghatotkach and Maurvi became Barbarik. Who later became famous as Shyam.
Maurvi Nandan
Barbarik i.e. Shyam Baba is called Maurvi Nandan because of being the child of Maurvi (Kamankanta). During the Khatu Shyam fair, the chants of Maurvi Nandan resonate a lot.
Bandhari
Barbarik was a brave warrior like his grandfather and father. Brave Barbarik had three such arrows with which he could conquer the entire universe. That's why Shyam Baba is called three arrows. There was neither an archer like him in the whole world, nor has there been till today.
Shish Ke Daani
During the Mahabharata war, when Barbarik came to seek blessings from his mother, the mother took a promise from him to support the defeated side. That is, the one who will be defeated in the war, they will fight on his side. Lord Krishna was omnipresent. He knew that the defeat was to be for the Kauravas, in such a situation, if Barbarika fought the war on his side, the situation could change. In such a situation, he disguised as a Brahmin and then asked for the head. Barbarik donated his head. For this reason Shyam Baba is called the benefactor of the head.
Shri Shyam
Shri Krishna also told Barbarik the reason for asking for Sheesh donation. He said that before the war begins, the head of the best Kshatriya in the three worlds has to be sacrificed for worshiping the battlefield. So they were compelled to do so. Barbarik requested him to see the war till the end and give his name to him. Shri Krishna accepted his request. Pleased with this sacrifice, Shri Krishna decorated Barbarik with the title of the best hero in the war. He also gave his name Shyam to him.
Kali Yuga Ke Avtaar
Along with giving him the name Shyam, Lord Shri Krishna also gave him a boon that he would be worshiped in Kali Yuga. That's why he is also called the incarnation of Kaliyuga. Kaliyuga is going on now and in such a situation Shyam Baba is the center of faith of the devotees. Every year lakhs of devotees come and attend Baba's court.
Leele ka ashwar
Shyam Baba is called the horse of Leele. Actually, Veer Barbarik had a blue horse. The color blue is also called Leela in the local language. That is why he is called the blue horse or the Leele ke horse.
Lakhdatar
The glory of Shyam Baba is unique. It is said that one who is blessed by Shyam Baba, becomes prosperous in every way. Due to this belief, Shyam Baba is called Lakhdatar. This is the reason why among the devotees of Shyam Baba, even an ordinary person becomes rich. A large number of devotees come from West Bengal, Assam, Maharashtra, Punjab, Gujarat etc. to Shyam ji's fair.

Shyam Baba is the ruler of Khatu. That's why he is called Khatu Naresh.

Since Shyam Baba has the blessings of Lord Shri Krishna. That is why the peacock, the flute, the favorite thing of Shri Krishna is also dear to him. Because of having a peacock, he is called a peacock holder.
